6 Steps to Staying Hydrated

The combination of warmer weather, a natural increase in movement and higher humidity can leave us feeling a little
dehydrated and flat. You may also find yourself consuming more alcohol than usual during the summer holiday periods, and losing sense of your usual routine. These are all factors which leave our cells desperate for hydration. Common signs of dehydration include: a dry mouth and lips, headaches, dizziness and darker coloured urine.

Drinking more water is the obvious solution to increasing your daily water intake, however read on for some simple steps to increasing your hydration to feeling fresh, cleansed and energised all summer long.

Drink a glass of water immediately upon waking

This will set you up for a positive day and get your digestion system firing from the get go. Try to get into the habit of leaving a glass next to your bed at night so that you won’t forget.

Spice up your water

Try adding flavour to your water like lemon slices, mint leaves or cucumber. Adding a splash of aloe vera juice, juice of half a lime and a pinch of high quality salt (like celtic salt) is a great way to increase mineral levels while keeping your drink exciting.

Don’t underestimate coconut water

Coconut water is loaded with electrolytes like potassium, sodium and magnesium. Coconut water is lower in sugar than typical sports drinks and will leave you feeling amazing. Opt for a 100% pure coconut water where possible.

Eat water-rich foods

Try eating your water as well as drinking. These can help contribute to your daily intake. My favourite hydrating foods include cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries and celery.

Consider frozen treats

There is nothing better on a hot summer’s day than a cold ice block. Try blending or juicing
your favourite fruits (e.g/ watermelon, lime and mint) then freezing into ice block moulds for a
delicious and hydrating snack.

Carry a water bottle with you

Invest in a water bottle that you will love drinking from! My preference is an insulated stainless steel
bottle to keep your water chilled all day long. Keep this with you in your car and at work. Challenge yourself to refilling your bottle 2-3 times per day.
