The Impact of Exercise on Skin and Aging

We often focus our attention and money on what we put on our skin. Serums, creams, treatments. And what we put into our bodies through nutrition and supplementation. But one of the most powerful influences on skin health is something we often overlook: how we move. Exercise works hard beneath the surface, supporting circulation (increasing blood flow by up to 50%), collagen production (which declines by around 1% each year after our mid-20s), and stress regulation (reducing cortisol levels linked to inflammation). All of which play an important role in how our skin looks and ages.

1. Cardiovascular Exercise & Skin Health

There’s a reason you get that post-Pilates glow — and it’s not just sweat.

Cardiovascular exercise increases our heart rate (typically to 50–85% of its maximum) and boosts circulation, delivering a steady flow of oxygen and essential nutrients to skin cells. This enhanced blood flow (which can rise by up to 50%) helps nourish the skin from within, supporting cell regeneration and repair.

At the same time, improved circulation assists in flushing out toxins and metabolic waste, which can otherwise contribute to dullness, congestion, and inflammation.

Over time, a low-impact, gentle cardio routine may lead to brighter, more radiant skin, improved tone and texture, and a natural, healthy glow.

2. Resistance Training & Collagen Production

While often associated with muscle tone and strength, resistance training may also play a role in supporting skin structure. Emerging research suggests that strength-based exercise can help stimulate collagen production (which declines by around 1% per year after our mid-20s), the protein responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity.

3. Stress Reduction & the Mind-Body Connection

One of the most significant ways exercise can impact aging is through stress reduction.Chronic stress accelerates the aging process, both internally and externally. Elevated cortisol levels (the body’s primary stress hormone) are linked to inflammation, collagen breakdown, and visible signs of aging such as fine lines and dullness.

Movement, particularly mindful forms like Pilates, creates a powerful mind-body connection that helps regulate the nervous system and lower cortisol levels (by up to 20–30%). When we practice consistent, mindful movement (even 2–3 sessions per week), we can reduce our physical and emotional stress, improve skin clarity and tone and achieve a softer, more balanced appearance.

Exercise is more than a tool for fitness, it’s a valuable player in supporting longevity and skin health. By improving circulation, supporting collagen, and reducing stress, consistent mindful movement helps create the conditions for healthier, more radiant skin at all ages.
