In Australia, the local longevity industry is projected to reach approximately $16 billion by 2030, reflecting growing consumer demand for preventative health, advanced diagnostics, and personalised healthcare. The challenge is that longevity has become associated with expensive supplements, celebrity biohackers, and promises of extending lifespan, losing sight of what longevity medicine was originally intended to do.

Most people wait until health symptoms appear before taking action. A Look Inside The Longevity Medicine Clinic 

  1. DEXA Scan (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) – Body Composition Analysis

What it measures
A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-ray beams at two different energy levels to precisely measure body composition. Unlike standard scales or even BMI, a DEXA scan distinguishes between lean muscle mass, body fat, and bone mineral density and maps exactly where fat is distributed across the body, including visceral fat (the fat stored around internal organs).

Why it matters for longevity
What we weigh tells us very little about how healthy we are. Two people of identical weight can have dramatically different biological age and disease risk depending on their ratio of muscle to fat, and where that fat sits in the body.

  • Visceral fat – deep abdominal fat surrounding vital organs is a primary driver of chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, and accelerated biological ageing. It is strongly associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and dementia.
  • Skeletal muscle mass, on the other hand, is one of the strongest predictors of longevity. Maintaining muscle as we age is directly linked to metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, immune function, and independence in later life. Low muscle mass (sarcopenia) is associated with higher all-cause mortality.
  • Bone density data from the DEXA also identifies early osteoporosis or osteopenia, conditions that are largely silent until a fracture occurs, but which are highly preventable with early intervention.

The DEXA scan provides the clinical baseline from which Dr Adam Brown develops personalised exercise, nutrition, and therapeutic strategies tailored to each patient’s specific body composition profile.

  1. EEG Brain Scan (Electroencephalography) – Cognitive and Neurological Health Assessment

What it measures
An EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain by detecting brainwave patterns across different frequencies. It provides a real-time map of how different regions of the brain are communicating and functioning.

Why it matters for longevity
Cognitive decline is one of the most feared consequences of ageing, and yet the neurological changes that precede it often begin decades before symptoms appear. The brain is not static, it is continuously remodelling itself, and its functional efficiency is deeply influenced by sleep, metabolic health, inflammation, stress, hormonal balance, and cardiovascular health.

An EEG gives us objective data on brain activity that cannot be captured by questionnaires or cognitive tests alone. It can identify disruptions in brainwave patterns associated with poor sleep quality, chronic stress, or early neurodegeneration, and allows Dr Adam Brown to design targeted interventions — from sleep optimisation and metabolic protocols to specific supplementation and lifestyle strategies  that support long-term cognitive resilience.

  1. VO₂ Max Test – Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Aerobic Capacity

What it measures
VO₂ max is the maximum volume of oxygen the body can consume and utilise during sustained exercise. It is measured during a graded exercise protocol, typically on a treadmill or bike while respiratory gases are analysed breath-by-breath. The result gives a precise, objective measure of cardiorespiratory fitness.

Why it matters for longevity
VO₂ max is consistently identified in the scientific literature as one of the single strongest predictors of longevity and all-cause mortality, more predictive than most cardiovascular risk factors, including blood pressure and cholesterol.

A low VO₂ max is associated with significantly elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, and early death. Conversely, a high VO₂ max is strongly protective: individuals in the top percentiles for aerobic fitness have been shown to have dramatically lower rates of chronic disease and mortality compared to those in the bottom percentiles.

VO₂ max is also a marker of biological age. It declines with age, but the rate of decline is highly modifiable through targeted exercise. Understanding a patient’s precise VO₂ max allows Dr Adam Brown to design individualised training protocols, including specific aerobic and high-intensity interval approaches to protect and improve cardiorespiratory function across the lifespan.

I went into the program assuming I was healthy and overall, I was. But the assessment revealed several opportunities to improve how I age, despite having no obvious health concerns. The biggest lesson? Longevity medicine isn’t about finding disease. It’s about finding your potential.

Here are 5 things I learnt from my experience with longevity medicine...

  1. One of the most interesting findings was that my brain performs best when supported by structure and routine. The assessment reinforced that motivation isn’t something we should rely on. Systems, habits and clear routines often outperform motivation.
  2. One recommendation was to regularly engage in challenging, purposeful activities. Just like muscles, our brains benefit from being used. Decision-making, problem-solving, learning new skills and maintaining social connections all contribute to long-term cognitive health.
  3. Despite strong cognitive performance, one area identified for improvement was supporting overall brain energy and resilience. Sleep, recovery, hydration and physical activity are essential pillars of long-term brain health and should not be overlooked.
  4. One of the biggest themes throughout my results was the importance of maintaining muscle mass. We often think of muscle as something aesthetic, but muscle is one of the strongest predictors of healthy ageing, independence and metabolic health.
  5. What surprised me most was that longevity medicine wasn’t centred around expensive interventions. The recommendations focused on fundamentals: maintaining muscle mass, supporting metabolic health, reducing inflammation, prioritising recovery and protecting cognitive function. I’m often asked which supplements I take. While this looks different for everyone, here is an overview of supplementation which has worked for me in fuelling my body and brain, developed by working with Adam, based on extensive testing and personalised goals.
